After years of intensive studies I arrived in Australia and realised that I can’t buy a Big Mac without stumbling over my words and making mistakes. I asked myself how it could be that so many long hours of studying had not had the desired effect.
It was such a painful question that I started my own research and the result was enlightening. I found tens and tens of different methods all claiming to be the most-efficient and scores of teachers whose methods were “absolutely new”.
I discovered that my previous teachers had used a grammar-translation teaching approach with me. My research explained to me all the errors in the methodologies that my teachers had used. Was this really useful? Yes! Now it is absolutely clear that:
- The problem of how best to learn a language has not been solved yet (if it has, why do we see so many “revolutionary” methods and approaches?).
- There is a lot of misleading information about the teaching of languages (if not, why do so many people find it difficult, if not almost impossible, to learn a language?).
Luckily, I’m not a linguist (don't like this word) and I’m sure that the world does not need another “method”. All we need is to simply remove rubbish and waste from learning… and we need really good cleaners for the job!
